Tie it On
Historically speaking, gladiator sandals symbolize the style of shoe or boot that gets wrapped around an ankle or a calf harking back to the ancient Romans trained to fight with weapons against other men or wild animals. In today’s context, although you can consider New York a jungle of sorts, there are no wild animals or humans to fight in the city. Our jobs have become more or less nondescript, and we are fighting a different battle every morning: getting dressed.
Summer has arrived and to make our lives easier most of us want to throw on a dress or a cool pair of shorts to start the day. Today on the Fashion Hunter, I decided to take the challenge of the gladiator sandals to the next level and throw on a halter, harem pants, sandals, and a watch that all tie and wrap. Bada Bing.
Ramy Brook top, ZARA harem pants, Proenza Schouler gladiator sandal
To start, the concept of wearing everything with loose strings was a tough one. Starting at the southern regions, I decided these high strappy sandals are reminiscent of vague “times past” without being dated like the retro platforms that are so chic again right now. Personally, I love the look of gladiator sandals, mainly on other people because of my height. The single annoyance of the gladiator sandal fashion trend is the rows and rows of buckles and endless string– and yet not being able to tighten or loosen the straps around my calves correctly. As for those harem pants, they might be the season’s trickiest trend, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try a pair out – just make sure you wear the right accessories with them. You already know it’s hot out, so show some skin for crying out loud, this time on the back in a Ramy Brook halter.
As far as accessories go, I’m very about the the smaller the better, especially in the sweltering city (who wants to lug a big bag around)? Give your shoulders a break, and put the work on your arms with this chain wrap around watch by Sara Designs.
Sara Designs All Chain Wrap Watch adds the ultimate capital S shine, $330, McQ Alexander McQueen Mini studded PVC clutch, Only $155! Jennifer Zeuner hand chain, $198.00
Then throw on some lipstick, a necklace made of wheat by Aurelie Bidermann, and a shining star from Dana Rebecca Designs.
And…. that’s a wrap! End of story. Have a great first weekend of summer! xo
