Last night I had the pleasure of attending a screening of one of my favorite classic films, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, played al fresco as part of the Bryant Park Film Festival. There is really nothing like the collective experience of sitting outdoors on a warm summer night taking in a great flick in the company of thousands of mutual admirers.

This was one of legendary bombshell, Marilyn Monroe’s breakthrough films–her performance as Lorelei Lee is campy and hilarious, and her pal brunette Jane Russell as the wise-cracking best pal Dorothy Shaw is priceless.

Naturally, I was inspired by all the incredible outfits from the 50’s. Especially the hot pink gown that Monroe wore while singing “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend.” The dress, copied by Madonna and counted others, fetched over $200,000 at auction, proving that the 1950’s Glam still resonates in modern culture.

Fur muffs, Purple turtlenecks. Hunter green to die for. Shopping at Schiaparelli in Paris. Berets, black feathers, ladylike dressing, poodle skirts, plaid coats. I’m breathless!

The pair set off on a cruise ship headed for Paris and they are truly on the hunt for wealthy aristocrat, (right up my alley). Well known for Monroe’s performance, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”, this brightly colored musical comedy is great and I highly recommend it.
