Bulletproof

I am a sucker for sample sales. My inbox gets flooded this time of year with a slew of invites from designer showrooms and I have to edit which ones will make the cut. For me and countless others, the designer sample sale is a time to snag the trend you might have missed out on, and get that special piece. At retail, faced with high price tags, I have the urge to buy everything, but I hold back that urge, and just window shop. The fine act of leaving the store to think about what I want, allows me more time, which inevitably allows the contents of my bank account to enter my mind. A total buzz-kill. But one of my favorite habits is... Read More

Fast Fashion

Our closets house our most prized possessions from that vintage Gucci bag your mom bought you over 10 years ago, to the designer frocks that we take the utmost care of. Our closets should be a safe haven where you find what you love, whether old or new, that fill voids known amongst the strongly devoted fashionistas. But sometimes our favorite room has the capacity to catapult us into a frenzy thinking “we have nothing to wear.” I have many of these mornings where I peek in to my closet just to exit in utter frustration. Especially when it is  packed to the brim, collecting cobwebs. On that note, I hope most of you donated some of those unwanted clothes to the victims of Hurricane... Read More

A Splash of Paint

ALDO McCamish Printed Pointed shoes by ASOS, J Brand jeans I took this picture last week right before the Hurricane hit, on a sunny day, in my boyfriend jeans, when the leaves were falling hard from the trees. I was hoping to put this up on my site for a “how to get the look” post, but as the weather took a turn for the worse, here are my feet pre-Sandy. On a side note, my place has been a revolving hotel with guests in and out, and I haven’t taken off said jeans since last week. When I purchased these shoes last month on ASOS, I thought, I could make these myself. And then I contemplated buying the paint and splashing the shoe in an artistic formation, similar... Read More

Onward!

As I type this, I am using the power of the Internet, something I no longer take for granted. Plenty of people across the Northeastern region are still devastated by the effects of Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. The destruction and disruption to countless lives is beyond belief. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the storm. And all I want to do is help in any which way I can. Global warming continues to fool us making us humans more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions. That said, l know we have to build an organizational and technological superstructure to be able to better respond to storms and rebuild after they have hit. I think the emergency response team is on that. Which leaves... Read More

Sandy’s Silver Lining

Much of my neighborhood is still without power and many of the upscale local boutiques are slowly opening in the hopes of luring customers in with signs that read ” We have power!” “Come in and recharge!” Yesterday, I peeked in to one of my go-to boutiques and there were Sandy signs for discounts and free snacks. What I learned from this is that when we are in crisis mode in the wake of a disaster, everybody comes together. Even the weary man with money in his pocket. This particular wanderer came in asking what was on sale for his wife. Scratching his head in contemplation, with price tags in the 4-number club, he wasn’t buying in. “Two thousand dollars for a skirt?” “Reduced to $1,700?”... Read More

In Disguise

I almost forgot how to type. Sandy and all her devious plans to drown Manhattan and the Northeastern seaboard has kept me off the internet grid making these past few days challenging to say the least. I basically got away unscathed, but for a few flickering lights and down trees, but for many of us New Yorkers stranded or without power, life has been challenging to say the least. I know the last 24 hours have been tough for many of you and I hope you and your families are safe. Back to regular programming, today on the Fashion Hunter, in honor of a heart-wrenching non-existent Halloween 2012 caused by Stormin’ Sandy’s devastating aftermath, I am sending you love with a DIY eye makeup tutorial. Fortunately... Read More

Oh Sandy!

In the words of Danny Zuko “Oh Sandy, oh why, why why?” Why are you slamming into NYC and destroying homes, disrupting transportation, and basically screwing up everything across the Northeastern Seaboard right about now? Today on the Fashion Hunter, I am sending all my thoughts and prayers to those who live in Zone A and are evacuated, ordering takeout from the Breslin restaurant whilst stuck at the Crosby Street Hotel (well maybe not those people). I pray for all the cab drivers who have driven me from the West Side Highway to Westchester county. I pray for all my aestheticians who are waiting patiently for me to come in and get my facial. I pray for all the 5AM baristas who make such beautiful designs... Read More

Has It Expired?

Milk, as we all know, has an expiration date. It says so right on the box in bold black letters. So, should beauty products, words, and fashion be stamped with an expiration date as well, indicating that they have a limited shelf life? We know celebrities have an extremely short existence – just look at Ms. Lohan who bit the dust and is now washed up. Today, a look at some of these trends followed by a question that wonders, are you dead?
