Coveting Céline

Consider Phoebe Philo, the designer behind the  label whose flipping major following waits with bated breath to see what genius narrative she is going to come up with next. Her existing line, consisting of cool sportswear, metal cuffs, widely copied totes, and funky shoes proves that she has good instincts–a certain je ne sais quoi. On tap for next season? Look down at the fur-lined Birkenstocks and fold-over clutches. Whatever Phoebe does turns to gold, and people usually want in. The mood, both of looseness and of ease, has permeated much of the Paris shows this season, and it has been quite exciting to watch the drama unfold from the interwebs. I was most interested in watching Céline, who sent out her own interpretation with slouchy... Read More

Easy Denim

Today, in more ways to cover your butt in denim of any variety, I bring you the over-sized, acid-washed jean. Have I mentioned that baggy pants are back? Not sure about them? Try Bermuda shorts! A bra let! A full skirt! All of these trendoids for Spring have serious staying power that you can wear now. So, you ask, what’s the big deal about these jeans? For one, they are super comfortable as they are washed millions of times, and for a close second, they look so fresh. And you can’t put a price tag on that. There have been many trends on and off the runway this Fashion Month, (Those Celine fur-lined Birkenstocks.. Mon Dieu!), but the ones with the most stamina is the jean.... Read More

Dries Von Noten: The Master of Grunge Couture

If you could imagine a fierce collection built solely on the masculine/feminine dynamic, Dries Von Noten has the master plan. Filled with contradictions like grunge-inspired plaids and tartans, integrated with sweet feminine lace and shantung, Dries Von Awesome, so he is named, is just that, and always presents the unexpected, the master of nothing being quite what it seems. His incongruous vision powers into his fascination with prints and his new collection ranks right up there with his other masterpieces. Sheer skirts layered over pants, plaid work shirts paired with organza skirts encrusted with flowers, paired with check-print stilettos (married with hints of Courtney Love) and there you have it, Grunge Couture. Batting for backlash of the digital world, Von Noten stands to be applauded for... Read More

Are You Checked In?

Take a look around you — on the morning coffee line at Starbucks, at the airport, and now, in New York’s underground… in the subway. Odds are huge that everybody is staring at their glowing smartphones, not having a conversation. According to CNN‘s recent poll, 42% of people use their smartphone to tackle boredom, it’s obvious that we don’t know what to do with the naked space that exists in our lives. Like cigarettes, junk food, chewing gum, or biting our fingernails, it’s a hard habit to break. The Eagles said it best “We are all just prisoners here of our own device. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.” Mind-boggling, really.

This and That

I am so glad to see the fickle month of September. Yesterday I was wearing a short shirt and sipping iced coffee, and today, I have on a wool sweater armed with a hot cocoa. This schizophrenic weather is Fall’s surprise. The days are still warm, the nights are downright cool, and my conflicted inbox is filled with holiday gift guides, and next Spring’s bralets. This can be quite stressful. No longer tank top weather (you can put those away now), T-shirts are still viable especially the graphic ones, leather is certainly happening, and lace is now a main attraction for Fall. Help! I have nothing to wear!!#$#@#$@^%$$! Green Day might have said it best, “Wake me up when September ends.” You have six more days to... Read More

The Power of Prada

If there’s one designer that can dictate the direction that fashion will turn, its Miuccia Prada. Turning all heads, she sets the trends, and we as writers, editors, stylists, and consumers, are often in awe of the outcome. Dozens of imitators admire her collections, therefore funneling her “pinspirations” (Prada imitations) to the masses. In case you forgot, this season is it all about mixing prints, and the chunky platform, and Spring 2012 was all about the flaming shoe. Backstage before her Spring 2013 show, Miuccia Prada quipped ” Dream is forbidden, nostalgia is forbidden, to be sweet is not good. The clothes are the expression of this impossible dream.” Her sentiments address two opposite character traits of womanhood: toughness and the softer side, and her clothes... Read More

LFW: On The Streets

The truth lies within who you are wearing. Or does it? Mere days after New York Fashion Week has ended– the in-crowd already attending shows in London and Milan– there have been some quips in the industry about street style photography, who is qualified to get their picture taken, and why. If shiny Harper’s Bazaar editors, famous-by name-with-over-500 billion-Google-hits bloggers, and celebs are getting their pictures taken, then what hope is there for true indie fashionista? In a world where street-style photographers have become celebrities in their own right, these questions are thought provoking, defying simplistic answers. I read a straightforward interview last week of Scott Schumann of The Sartorialist in response to the The New York Times article on the evolution of street photography as a free billboard... NYFW Part 3: The Dreamer, The Zombie, and the Happy-Go-Lucky

For those of you waiting desperately in line for that iPhone 5, (hey get me one)! this is a great opportunity to shove some more fashion week forecasts your way. I know you are probably sick of New York Fashion Week coverage, but there is always more to rehash and at the very least you’ll be an well-informed consumer. From Mongolia to doomsday to fantasy, let’s take a ride. Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia took a long backpacking trip and landed on a spiritual journey and their dreams came to life. Rich embroidery throughout the collection, Sachin and Babi used beautiful tapestries to illustrate their love for Bohemian style. My favorites were the short military jackets, and the beautiful flowy silk dresses. In true belly dancer... Read More
