Frieze Art Fair
Have you finally recovered from Art Basel? Too bad, because it’s the Frieze Art Fair in New York City. Art Fairs are a gateway to introduce people to the world of art, and nowhere is that more prevalent than Frieze New York in Randalls Island.
With just under 200 galleries split into four sectors — the main fair, the Spotlight section for solo booths, the Frame section for galleries established since 2007 showing one artist’s work, and the Focus section for galleries founded in or since 2003 — Frieze New York is a monster fair. Luckily it is also sited on a verdant stretch of Randall’s Island inside an airy and bright tent and boasts the best food and drink options of any art fair this side of the Atlantic.
To me, going to an art fair that is close to home, feels like I am away for the day, a mini getaway. Here are other compelling reasons why you should visit the fair this weekend.
1. Interactive Art
I entered a personality test where I had to choose things like: coffee or tea, how I like my toilet paper roll to face, and how much I spend on vegetables. The result:
I’m Into Big. Upon asking what that meant they said it is up for interpretation. There was a denim massage chair, and people dressing up to climb up a half pipe just for kicks.
2. Richard Prince’s Instagram
It is kind of cool to see our daily obsession, 38 real-life Instagrams inkjet-printed on 48-inch by 56-inch” canvas.
3. People Watching
One of my favorite activities.
4. Top-notch food.
Some of New York’s most beloved restaurants have pop-ups at Frieze: Court Street Grocers, Dimes, Frankies Spuntino, Marlow & Sons, Milk Bar, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, Parlor Coffee, Prime Meats, and Roberta’s Pizza were all there this year.
5. The Great Outdoors
Nothing is better than a ferry ride in the middle of Manhattan especially on a beautiful sunny day.
