Run With It
If you have been following my blog, it is not really my style to write about athletic wear. Why? Because I wear it everyday to workout. It’s really boring. Most moms with kids at school prance around in their ubiquitous black Lululemon leggings all day after they go to the gym. Granted, I don’t subscribe to runway perfection at 8am, but yoga pants after lunch just isn’t tres chic. Celebrity mothers, who are camera-ready watched by perhaps every blogger and photographer out there, have raised the bar. Angelina Jolie and Elle McPherson have become the poster mothers for classically chic school-run dressing. Sarah Jessica Parker walks her daughter to school in skin-tight Rag and Bone jeans. Gwyneth Paltrow tells all in her newsletter GOOP about what she is wearing on her field trip excursions with her kids.
With the NYC Marathon happening today, this is the day like no other to be inspired by conquering a physical task. To the tune of 26 miles. BTW, I am obsessed with getting my sweat on. I have always been athletic: a cheerleader, a sprinter, a gymnast, an ice skater, a skier, a biker, and a yogini, but never did anything with my ability to balance on one leg while flipping mid-air. And no, I never ran the Marathon. But maybe one day I’ll get the courage.
After seeing some of the recent Resort 2012 runway collections, I decided at amend my never-leave-the-house-in-your-sneakers rule. Leave it to Alexander Wang to come up with pretty running shoes that are good enough for the treadmill yet stylish enough for the streets of New York. Truth be told, I love these so much, I want them for myself. One look at some of these sweet sneaks and you may change your mind too.
Wang was inspired by seventies-era marathoners. Can’t you tell? There was color-blocked running shorts in contrast trim, slick zip-front jackets, and scuba-inspired dresses.
Just last week the NY Times ran an article on the growing pressures of mothers in NYC to dress up fashionably for drop off. Yes this is true, and we should care about how we look even whilst doing errands in the grocery store. Even Neiman Marcus just recently opened a department called NM on the go that features looks by Stella McCartney and Payne. It’s about time. You only get one chance for that first impression.
So, run to that spin class. Release stress. Breathe. Have fun. And change out of those yoga pants. Carpe Diem. Unless of course, your butt looks fabulous a k a amazing….in which case, its fashion approved.

I LOVE that picture of you on the Betsey Johnson bike! So fun and fabulous.
And bring on fashionable gym wear! I actually read somewhere that a group of scientists found that when people felt fabulous in their gym clothes, they actually worked out harder!!
I’ll take that!!
xo
Stephanie Unter is so talented -not only does her fashion sense make Rachel Zoe look like she should be dressing barbies. Her ability to entertain while informing you how to look your best and set the trend rather than follow it makes her a force that soon the entire fashion world will recognize.
Check in every day to know who’s wearing what and what you should wear.
Remember SHE is the NT Fashion Hunter
She Finds It You Flaunt IT
Thanks Melissa for that interesting piece. Great theory–If you feel fabulous, you burn more calories! Set ’em straight! Chance, thanks as always for the wonderful complement! I am the Hunter!
I agree with the Rachel Zoe comment…..don’t get what is so special/compelling about her “style.”
Website looks fantastic!! Thank you for my post! Your closet picture looks almost like my closet, because I have everything sectioned by color…makes getting dressed so much easier. Each morning, I ask myself, “what color do I feel like today?” Today it’s a bright fuzzy YELLOW cable sweater and my Hudson skinny jeans with over the knee boots! :0
Steph, I love seeing that image of Elle MacPherson (I want that outfit) and learning about what celeb moms wear for drop off and pick up. I also want the Alexander Wang sneakers….
Kudos Stephanie! In the picture of you on the Betsy Johnson bike—you are wearing the perfect color red for you! The right color makes someone come alive!!!
Hi Steph: I totally agree about looking your best at the gym. I also stand right next to the trainer/instructor so everyone has to see me as well. I guess I need some new stuff!!
Baby, you surely make fashion come alive.
You are doing great.
Dad
Thanks Pat—love the way you pick your daily look! Julie–DON’T WE ALL want to look like Elle (a k a 6 ‘ TALL) but those pants and sneaks are available. LMK! 🙂
