The Latest Fashion Trend
The fashion folk started a trend last spring that continues to spark the imagination of trend-setting women worldwide. Feathers! Feathers are fabulous. They help embellish collars, add high style to cocktail dresses, spark bohemian jewelry, and are used as hair accessories for both adults and kids.
They are a statement of femininity, luxury, and flirtatiousness.
Designers such as Peter Som, Dior, Lanvin, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and Naeem Khan have “feathered” it up on the Fall 2011 runways.
Pamella Roland has used feathers in her most recent NYC runway show. She has incorporated them into her collection since Day 1 and recently has worn a feather capelet with a little black dress! Her favorite feathered look from her new collection is a jersey dress with lace sleeves and ostrich feathers. “It’s a very glam look.”
I’ve been seeing feathers all over the New York runways, at the WWD Magic trade shows in Las Vegas, and all over Italy and Paris. They are in the fat 500+ pages of Vogue and Elle’s September issues, and have just been released to stores. Can’t wait to get my hands on those monsters.
Recently, when I was in Florence, I spotted a new Canadian designer Maryam Keyhani who is the Creative Director of her namesake line. She features a wide range of statement jewelry which mainly includes feathers, as well as leather, another huge trend for fall. Her line has garnered the attention of global retailers like Luisa Via Roma, 10 Corso Como, and Franck Et Fils. And for a good reason. They are sophisticated one-of-a-kind statement pieces and I am lucky to own one of her treasures.
You can easily try out this trend in your hair by threading a feather into your locks. “Its a new trend, it just takes a few minutes, and it makes people happy,” says Brenda Pederson, a stylist at the Oscar Biandi Salon in NYC.
Or..the feather can be used as a ponytail holder like my daughter gladly models.
The way to rock the trend? Treat feathers like sequins.
Do not be intimidated by them, they can be a great tool.
They can be super stylish and glamorous like these daring designers showcased.
Steph – very “au courant.” Thanks for the feather update…
